Landmarc Scientific Concepts: Exosomes
- Updated Sunday Jun 23 2024
Exosomes are small, membrane-bound vesicles released by cells into the extracellular environment. They range from 30 to 150 nanometers in size and carry various biomolecules, including proteins, lipids, and RNA. Exosomes play crucial roles in cell communication, influencing numerous physiological processes such as immune responses, tissue repair, and cell signaling. They are also implicated in the progression of diseases, including cancer and neurodegenerative disorders. Due to their ability to transfer molecular cargo between cells, exosomes are being explored as potential biomarkers for disease diagnosis and as therapeutic delivery vehicles in regenerative medicine and targeted drug delivery.
